What is CNA Week?

CNA Week is a heartfelt tribute and expression of gratitude for the dedication and resilience of certified nursing assistants across the country. It is a celebration intended to honor and appreciate their essential contributions to quality healthcare delivery.

Why do we celebrate CNA Week?

The care provided by steadfast CNAs who overcome the profession's many challenges can lead to happier, more satisfied patients and families and improved outcomes. In a nutshell:

Care + Companionship + Trust + Communication + Advocacy = Effective Treatment

Essential care and companionship often build rapport and trust, opening the way to freer communication between CNAs and their patients. This bonding itself is therapeutic, but it can also allow the CNA to discover concerns, symptoms, or behaviors that may not have been detected yet are relevant to the patient's health and are key to effective treatment. In this manner, the CNA assumes the role of patient advocate, informing the healthcare team of this vital information.

Understanding the profound impact CNAs have on the health and wellbeing of patients, and their indispensable role in excellent healthcare performance, Nursa is celebrating CNA Appreciation Week with heartfelt gratitude and admiration.

When did CNA Week start?

The National Network of Career Nursing Assistants (NNCNA) successfully lobbied Congress in 1986 to designate one week of June as National Nursing Assistants Week. Since then, this has become an annual observance dedicated to honoring the contributions of CNAs in healthcare.

More ways to celebrate CNA Appreciation Week

Wondering how to thank CNAs during CNA week this year? Take the time to show your appreciation for the CNAs in your life with one of the following ideas:

  • A personal letter to individual CNAs mentioning their specific qualities, attitudes, or achievements
  • A memory board where staff members can post inspiring stories or pictures of themselves or others
  • A picnic where families are welcome, with activities for children or sports

Last but not least, a word of thanks in the hallways or meetings doesn’t take much time, and yet it can make a tired CNA feel seen.

These ideas are but a small sample. Get creative with posters, radio interviews, or even a song.
